"A Song in the Front Yard"

This poem is reference to racsim. The writer, Gwendolyn Brooks, uses symbolism to convey her point of view. Her front yard represents her being alone by herself, not being able to interact with all of the other  wihte children. She is so use to having things so structured and one specified way, but she wants to explore other things and make her own rules. That's what she means in the first stanza. This poem basically creates an image of what Gwendolyn may have felt like as a child, grouing up in the heat of racism in the 60's.
