Gwendolyn Brooks
Poet / Writer
"An Independent Man"
The title gives the first clue. She is describing the qualities of an independent man and a man that any woman would dream of. In the poem, it basically tells that an independent man would probably not do well in a structured relationship with a woman because he is use to beking to himself.
Lastly, the concluding couplet suggests that you should love a man for his assets and what he is and leave it that because a perfect man doesn't actually exist.
