Gwendolyn Brooks: Her Style

Gwendolyn Brooks was grew up in time of racism in a very rough part of Chicago. Her inspiration for her poems generated ffrom her everyday encounters in the inner city whre she lived; many of her poems reflect that. As you read Gwendolyn's poems, you will instantly realize that she is a subliminal writer; she nevers directly states what she is referring to in her works. There's always symbolic characters that are written as one thing but is actually relating to something that occured in her life. For an example, in her poem "A Song in the Front Yard", her backyard is representing the things she never was able to experiene or discover: things she was kept away from.

Gwendolyn's poems are mainly free verse. She never really hvae a specific structure or style; she just writes from her life.

Also, she was heavly influenced by the Harlem Renaissance writer Paul Dunbar.
